Retirement Income Planning in a Low-Return World

The objective of this presentation is to recognize the life cycle implications of a sustained low return environment on retirement planning. I will discuss the evidence that historically low dividend and bond yields predict lower future returns, the implications of increasing longevity among higher-income workers, the relation between expected returns and optimal retirement savings, and the impact of increasing longevity and lower returns on optimal savings rates. I will also introduce a range of investment and behavioral solutions that become more attractive when portfolio return expectations are more modest.

Planning for the Modern Family

Based around the characters of the popular TV show Modern Family, this presentation discusses the myriad of planning issues faced by this fictional family. These issues include: a blended family where the new spouse is the same age as the children from the prior marriage, a noncitizen spouse, an affluent family business succession scenario, and a married same sex couple with an adopted child. In addition to the planning issues raised, the presentation discusses a range of insurance based planning strategies and solutions which the fictional characters might consider using to help them achieve their unique goals and objectives. Learning Objectives Include:

1. Understanding the estate planning challenges faced by a blended family
2. Familiarization with the issues faced by potentially leaving assets to a non-citizen spouse.
3. Understanding of the issues and planning solutions to help a parent transfer a business to the next generation.
4. Increased comfort and conversational confidence around the unique financial and estate planning issues faced by same sex couples and unmarried couples
